3 Ways to Use a Social Listening API

We’re big data nerds at Infegy, and we love jumping into Infegy Starscape to dig through billions of social posts. Every day, we use our dashboards to slice and communicate different facets of the results clearly. With the ability to switch from one query to another within seconds, Starscape’s UI is fast, flexible, and an indispensable starting point in our own research.

But let's be honest. Sometimes you need the insights delivered straight to your own front door. Maybe you are locked down in the format in which they can be consumed. A prime example: a custom enterprise app developed for internal audiences who need to access the data in a certain context, or compared with other metrics or data sources.

Enter the Infegy Starscape API. The exact same system that powers the Starscape UI is available for you, allowing flexible access to Infegy’s 19+ years of social media data. Instead of siloing your social listening results, you can pipe insights directly from Infegy into the tools your team already uses.

First: a refresher on what the Starscape API offers…

The Infegy Starscape API seamlessly connects your apps to a wealth of social listening data. We’ve talked a lot about the nearly infinite possibilities of cool “stuff” you can build using the Infegy API.

Here’s a quick reminder of what’s available:

  • Individual post data, complete with full verbatim text content, author metadata, and derived sentiment analysis, all from a single endpoint with no limits or restrictions (not multiple, as with some other products);
  • Aggregations to slice across any of that metadata: geos, posting language, authorship by age, author gender, etc., if you want to take a higher-level look at the social landscape;
  • Topics grouped by the keywords found in posts can be extracted, or get a full view via the narratives (conversation themes) found in clusters of related posts so you can quickly understand the conversation at large.

Things really take a level-up when you put our Infegy AI to work over the API to generate:

  • Entire queries from simple, natural language prompts. Come up with term variants, include support for other languages, and take the hard work out of writing a query with AI Query Assist.
  • AI Summaries, not just keywords and topic lists, but whole summaries of the conversations across the universe of posts around your query, powered by Infegy’s robust analytics engine and including actual post samples delivered in the same format as the ones you see in Starscape.
  • AI Personas that uncover rich author and audience insights based on the bios, traits, and historical tendencies of the people driving the conversations in your social universe.

(This list probably reminded you that you need to explore Infegy Starscape and the API if you haven’t already – so go ahead and request a demo now!)

3 ways to use social listening data via Infegy's API

With so many capabilities and outputs available, let’s explore three distinct ways you can build with the Infegy Starscape API to bring the internet's conversations inside your own walls.

1. Dashboards on Demand: Integrating Social Data into your BI Tools

A sudden spike in post volume is an excellent early indicator that something is happening, but looking at social volume in a vacuum doesn't tell the whole business story. By hooking the Infegy API into your in-house Business Intelligence (BI) tools and reporting dashboards, you can display social metrics right alongside your internal sales data or web traffic.

Imagine tracking a new product launch: the Starscape API's aggregation endpoint feeds your BI dashboard, charting metrics like post volume and net sentiment (all derived using our internal, custom-trained sentiment analysis model, Infegy IQ) across every major social media network. Overlay those on your sales numbers, and the result is near real-time visibility: your teams can know if the dip in sales you’re seeing in one system correlates with a sudden PR crisis or negative backlash online.

Bringing these metrics into your in-house reporting gives your stakeholders a unified, high-level view of brand health without ever having to switch platforms.

2. Building Your Own Pulse: Powering In-House Applications

Volume trends alone can communicate… well, volumes of information. But understanding why a trend is happening still takes research into the contributing factors and context. The Infegy API is the ultimate research backend for applications designed to do analysis, casting a net wide enough to paint a complete picture of how netizens view your brand across the internet.

Let’s say your team uses a custom-built market research app to track consumer preferences around an in-house private label brand. By pinging our API, your app can leverage Infegy API’s Topics endpoint to instantly return the most-discussed words and topics from posts about your brand. It’s an easy way to get a quick feel for the themes in netizen sentiments.

Or, access Narratives data from the Clusters endpoint to distill the conversations around your brand into clear themes and, included by default, view a small sampling of posts that represent each theme. The dual view lets your internal researchers identify exactly which themes and keywords are driving the conversation and understand what people are actually saying. That on-demand speed and depth is what makes the Starscape API unique.

Building the Infegy API into your own software lets your apps natively translate internet chatter into concrete opportunities, empowering your users to make faster decisions and drive better outcomes around current and future products.

3. Fueling the Future: Contextualizing Internal AI Systems

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and even then, probably), you know that AI agents and internal large-language model-powered tools are the new operational standard for asking questions and doing research.

But here is the catch: even the smartest AI models (like Perplexity or Claude) need fresh, accurate context to avoid making vague assumptions or hallucinating answers, creating conjectures from mathematical models of language that have no foundation in actual internet discourse.

By incorporating the Infegy Starscape API into your own AI tech stack, your internal agents actually have the tools needed to respond intelligently to social data questions and can query our database to provide grounded, quantifiable interpretations backed by real data. And when you let your AI tap Infegy AI's Summaries and Personas, your agents can surface the most accurate, up-to-date information on any topic, with insights extracted from even massive post universes in seconds.

Your questions about any brand, product, event, or topic become knowledge for the LLM powering your agent, returned as-is for your team's reference, or layered into the context-rich answers we've come to expect from this technology.

When your AI tools run on data that's been through Infegy's natural language processing and refined by Infegy AI, they stop guessing and start delivering highly accurate, contextualized insights from real social media data.
